It was one of the first commercially available anime films in the US, and was a common fixture of the meager anime section of the average Blockbuster Video. The film is an adaptation of a series of novels by Hideyuki Kikuichi (Vampire Hunter D, Wicked City) and was directed by frequent collaborator Yoshiaki Kawajiri (Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust).
